THE SINKING BOAT
THE DILEMA OF THE SINKING BOAT!! YOUR SHIP IS SINKING!
There is one Lifeboat left that can only take 9 people. There´s a desert island about 10km away, but you don´t know how long you´ll have to wait for help to come and rescue you, so you will probably have to spend some time in the island.
As captain you have to choose who out of the 10 people will NOT get a place
1. NURSE
2. NELSON MANDELA (WINNER OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRICE)
3. DOCTOR
4. TEACHER
5. PREGNANT WOMAN
6. POLICE OFFICER
7. ENGINEER
8. SCIENTIST
9. SAILOR
10. SOLDIER

ResponderEliminarI don't understand very well the text.
ResponderEliminarI think are there some trik because isn't clear if the captain is in the island or in the ship.
If the captain is in the ship two people will not get a place, because they are 10 people and de captain and that's eleven people.
We don't count the captain. So, from the list of people we have to choose the one who we think is less important when they have to survive in the desert island.
EliminarWho to save or not is pretty relative.
ResponderEliminarFirst we have to look in the title if the people are preparing to spend a whole lifetime in the island, if not, we have to take out the one person who is less likely to survive into the Island (we don't know if the island has all the resources to make a livin in there) but some issues can eventually appear as lack of food, lack of water, extreme heat/cold...
So, without knowing the individual characteristics of the people who will be saved I would take out the elder one, but if one of them had a contagious disease or an incurable illness, that would be my first choice.
ok, good thinking, who knows? it could be a lifetime, you never know...
EliminarYes, another point would be medicine. If there is a first aid kit, who would take it? The people in the ship or the person to stay in the island? A first aid kit could save a life
EliminarFirst aid kit should be always with the big group of people.
EliminarFirst reason is that if one person is in need of First Aid maybe he/she's unable to treat himself.
Second reason is that if you keep the first aid kit with the group, you can heal various people, not just only one.
Right, so we increase their chances of survival.

Is it even morally acceptable to vote? Please take a look at this video and give your opinion how would you deal with such a situation? I am curious to find out!

The pregnant woman or Nelson, all the others have something special that makes them unique, but the pregnant woman and Nelson have no knowledge necessary for survival, especially the pregnant woman who would be a great burden since she could not contribute anything on the island and would consume more food
ResponderEliminarDon't you think that Mandela has already fulfilled many things in life and the child still has to be born?
EliminarYou would probably hate me for this, but I think everyone but one could bring a professional contribution for their survival. That is Mandela. I would leave Mandela in the deserted island because he has already achieved many goals in life. We don't know the age of all the others, but I assume Mandela is one of the oldest ones. What are the chances of his survival in the boat without being a burden for the others? I don't know, my argument might be a bit cold, but I think it's logical. What do you all thing? :)
ResponderEliminarhow about if some of them are crippled or insanely bleeding or secret murderers?
EliminarWe don't, we need visible evidences to make a decision now. But being the case, I would leave out the crippled of the one bleeding. Normally the secret murderers have an objective to kill and right now his/her main goal is survival. Besides, he/she wouldn't be a burden, but!! We wouldn't know anyway, would we. BECAUSE IT'S SECRET!
EliminarI couldn't bear myself to choose...As a captain I would sacrifice myself, and let the sailor navigate the boat...
ResponderEliminarI couldn't bear myself to choose...As a captain I would sacrifice myself, and let the sailor navigate the boat...
ResponderEliminarI think the two people who have made the biggest sacrifices in life (and definitely deserve to be rescued) are the police officer and solider. But if we have to start a new civilization on the island, they would probably be the two least useful. It depends how long we have to spend on this island. I think Nelson Mandela should offer though, to really earn that Nobel prize.
ResponderEliminarOtherwise accepting the prize and not actually offering himself would be like a fraud...

ResponderEliminarMy vote would be for the Police Officer. Being on an island to survive doesn't require the completion of any law, even less the laws that the Police Officer has learned in the past. Therefore, his only service for this new community would be the one assuring security for everyone, function already served by the soldier (who I personally consider more capable due to his training). Taking in consideration the other services in the list like health or education, which I consider more important than security, it seems to me that the Police Officer has no use in my community of survivors.
ResponderEliminarWhy do I consider Health or Education to be more important than security? Because I think they can help us to evolve, whether security it's just staying in the same place thinking we are safe when we are not. There is no complete safety, there never is. So I prefer to invest my resources in other spaces of human life, where we can be better as a society.
Well said, BUT what if the pregnant woman is about to give birth to the next Saddam Hussein, a man who brings years of chaos and disquiet to the island community? A policeman could be quite useful in that situation
EliminarI think Police Officers have more to offer than just making you obey the law. They have to be mentally and physically prepared for many different situations. They are cappable of dealing with crisis easily than regular people, and they have basic First Aid training and some survival skills (not as sharp as the soldier tho). It's true that the might not be the open minded ones that will take civilisation forth but they received training in a certain time of his life and can be very useful in a situation like this.
EliminarI was about to post a song but is not adecuate for this learning environment XD the band's name is SODOM and the song name's THE POLICE

EliminarI think the soldier is more capable of performing those kind of services you mention. He is prepared as well so no need to have both. And to what you point Ash that's why i think it is important to have teachers or Nelson Mandela, to avoid the birth of this kind of ideology
EliminarI leave there Nelson Mandela, the police officer and the engineer. Because the pregnant women is like two people. I don't need the police officer because I have a soldier. And engineer because yes. And the rest of the list and I are 9.
ResponderEliminarSorry woman, not women.
EliminarNelson Mandela
