THE DESERT DILEMMA

Will you survive?

FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Read the following text and individually write down seven of the most important items from the list to ensure survival and/or rescue.

2. Discuss and try to persuade the others that your chosen items are more important for survival than theirs.

What arguments do you have for your choices?

There is no wrong solution, but there are many variations

THE SITUATION

About ten o’clock in the morning in July, your small airplane has crashed in the Sonora desert in Northern Mexico. Both pilots are dead and all that is left of the aircraft is a burnt-out shell. One of the other passengers is injured. There was no radio in the airplane-

From experience you know that daytime temperatures can reach 43°C (110° Fahrenheit) and night-time temperatures reach freezing. All the passengers and yourself are dressed in light clothes. The area is flat and arid as far as the eye can see.

The following list of items survived the crash in good order:

- jack knife
- flashlight with four batteries
- large plastic poncho
- detailed pilot’s chart of the area
- instrument to measure blood pressure
- compass
- one overcoat per person
- one pocket mirror
- one pair of sunglasses per person
- two bottles of vodka
- book Edible Desert Animals
- bottle of 1000 salt tablets
- one quart of water per person

    4. It’s common knowledge that drinking salt water when you’re dehydrated is dangerous. Yet in the days before sports drinks, the first thing we got for dehydration during football practice was salt tablets with water. What’s the difference?

      —E.S., Knoxville, Tenn.

The main difference is the amount of salt. When you’re dehydrated, you need water, all right, but you need electrolytes (the scientific term for various salts) to survive too. Seawater has way too much of these salts, which can cause you to become more dehydrated than if you hadn’t drunk anything at all. But if you’re both dehydrated and low on salts—which is common in extreme physical activity, especially when you’re sweating heavily—and you drink only fresh water (which has very little salt), you will develop an electrolyte imbalance. Electrolytes are necessary for basic cell functions, and symptoms range from mild to severe. You can die from a lack of these salts; hence the old-fashioned salt tablets to prevent this from happening. They’re not used much today because they typically provided only two of the necessary electrolytes (sodium and chloride), and they could easily provide too much of them if not enough water was drunk at the same time. For extreme exercisers, modern sports drinks do the job much more safely.

    1. Good choices. It seems like you have a pretty good chance of surviving! You might also consider salt tablets as a prevention from dehydration;)
